In November 1942 British forces defeated Rommel at El Ala¬mein (Egypt) and American forces landed in Morocco and Algeria . In order for Germans to make an attempt at turning back the allied armies which was advancing to the country from both east and west sides , they sent their troops from Sicily to northern Tunisia . Conditions for the Allies were difficult - their supply lines were long and the weather was cold and rainy - and they found themselves in a stalemate until February 1943 .
