The capital of the Republic of Tunisia , Tunis Governorate , lies in the northern part of Tunisia . Among the major towns and cities in the governorate are: Al Marsa , Bardaw , Carthago (ancient capital of Tunisia) , Halq Al Wadi , Oudhna , and Sidi Bu Said . To reach Tunis Governorate , one can take a plane to the National Airport of Tunis Governorate which is always densely crowded with local passengers and tourists from all over the world .
