Markets in Houmt Souq

In the past , Houmt El Souq or the market neighborhood was one of the important stations in the way of the traveling merchants who pass by Tunisia . They were staying in a building with attractive Ottoman style called Funduqa or Inns consisting of two floors: the first one encloses the storerooms and places for animals; and the second one encloses the merchants' rooms . By the passage of time , such Funduqs were replaced with luxurious hotels for hosting the tourists who visit the city .

In spite of that , Houmt Souk is still famous for its markets that attract both Tunisians and foreigners alike for shopping in its markets . There are several specialized markets including: fruit and vegetables , fish , spices , goldsmith , and other souvenir shops . Such markets are usually held in Monday and Thursday except for the Fish market since there is a daily auction in the city .
