Water Temple



One of the worth visiting places in the city of Zaghaoun is the Water Temple which lies about 2km southwest of the old town along the continuation of Sidi Ali Azouz street, on a forested hillside. It is sometimes referred to as 'The Temple des Eaux', 'The Temple des Numphes', and 'The Nymphaeum'. It takes the shape of a semi-circular shrine. Built during the Roman times in the 2nd century CE, under the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the construction was originally not a temple, but simply a huge fountain. There are 24 arches and 12 niches around the circular temple and they were once used for purposes of decorating holding life-size statues representing the 12 months of a year.
