Tozeur



Tozeur Governorate (Tawzar‎) is one of Tunisia's twenty-four provinces located in the south-western section of the country. It is bounded by the Gafsa governorate to the north-east, the Kébili governorate to the south-east and by Algeria to the north-west. The governorate stretches over 4,719 km² with a population of roughly 98,000 (2004 census). Among the important towns in the Tozeur Governorate are: Degache, El Hamma du Jérid, Nefta (Nafta), Tamerza, and Tozeur (Tawzar‎), the capital city. Locals of the governorate earn their living from practicing agriculture on a wide scale and the region is renowned for the high quality of its dates, particularly the “Deglet Nour” variety. Around 830 ha of the date palm trees areas are devoted to market gardening and 670 ha of forage.
