Thuburbo Majus
Thuburbo Majus (pronounced ma-yoose or ma-juice) was originally an ancient Berber settlement or a Punic city in the 5th century BC in northern Tunisia, 60 km southwest of Carthage near the town of El-Fahs. After Rome conquered Carthage, Thuburbo Majus (or Thuburbo Maius) was forced to pay tribute to Rome until Emperor Hadrian paid it a visit and declared it a municipality under the Roman control in roughly AD 128. Thus, Thuburbo Majus was made a large developed Roman settlement with important trading centre for local agricultural produce - oil, wheat and wine.
