Skifa El Khala

The black passage or Skifa El Kahla is the only remaining part of the original Fatimid city of Mahdia. In the past, Mahdia was regarded as the piracy stronghold and this justifies the strong fortifications surrounding the city. This gate was one of the several gates within the huge walls surrounding the city and almost all of it destroyed by the passage of time. After the destruction of these stone fortifications, the city became a peaceful fishing port. Skifa El Kahla locates in a highly strategic square in the town few meters to the south of Mahdia Town Museum and to the east of Mosque of Mostapha Hamza .
