Roman Villas
In Amobel Street, to the west of the great Roman Theatre in Carthage lie the Roman villas, a number of Roman patrician houses that usher us into the lifestyle the Romans followed during their lifetime and the residents they occupied. A real sense of refined Roman life is given to the viewer at seeing a house known as the “Villa of the Aviary”, which is the best preserved of the site. Decorated with sumptuous marble and mosaic works, the building encloses a number of rooms preceded by a portico supported by columns. The terrace provides a splendid view over the bay of Tunis: from there, one can see a fine view of Carthage, with the Presidential Palace below, the Gulf of Tunis and beyond this Cap Bon. The garden surrounding the villa is paved with fine mosaics.
