Roman Theatre
The Roman Theater lies in Amobel Street, to the west of the Roman Villas, in Carthage. Dating back to the the mid second century AD, the theater had the capacity of more than 10.000 spectators. It was subject to great damage on the hands of the Vandals during the 5th century AD but it still had some of the lavish decorations and marble flourishes. Churchill once gave a speech to the British Army from this imposing structure. The theater was excavated at the end of the 19th century and since then it hosted a lot of musical performances, festivals and galas as well as so many literary events. Further restoration works were undertook to the structure since the 60’s in order to host the major Carthage international festival.
