Roman Amphitheatre
The Roman Amphitheater is about a IS-minute walk down from the museum in Carthage. Measuring 65m long by 37 wide, the theater was built in the l st century AD. Once one of the largest in the Roman Empire, it had the capacity of 36,000 people. Some historical documents tell that the construction had imposing structures with high arches. A legend tells that St Perpetua and St Felicity were martyred for their faith in the theater in 203; yet some historians suggest the incident occurred at a military camp outside Carthage. Today, all that remains is a neat overgrown oval shaped arena.
