Polygonal Fort
A witness of the rich history of Qalibiyah that goes deep back into history, the striking polygonal fort stands seductively on a hilltop overlooking the harbor. The fort was erected by the Carthaginians to be a military garrison use by their maritime police. Great destruction was caused to it during the First Punic War in the 3rd century BC, but reconstruction works were carried out after the war ended. With its strategic position, the fort played an enormously great role in repelling the Romans during the Second Punic War. The fort's old walls functioned as outer walls enclosing a Byzantine fortification in AD 580.
