National Theatre
The Art Nouveau National Theatre (commonly known as the National Theatre of Tunis or The Théâtre municipal de Tunis) was built by the French on 20 November 1902. The theater had been located since 1988 in the Khaznadar palace (in the Halfaouine quarter). In 1993, it also took possession of the former movie theater Le Paris with a capacity of over 300 spectaculars. It now lies near the Cafe de Paris, on the southern side of Avenue Habib Bourguiba. What is most interesting about the building is its appealing frontage which has the wonderful looking of a cake with icing sugar or a meringue. With a cultural nature, the theater hosts a variety of showings and performances including opera, ballet, symphonic concerts, and drama regularly given by Tunisian, Arabic and international actors.
