Mosque of Youssef Dey

The Mosque of Youssef Dey is famous for being the first mosque in all over Tunis to be modeled in the Ottoman style of architecture. Located in Souq el-Berka, Medina, the mosque was constructed in 1616 AD and designed by the Andalusian architect, Ibn Ghalib. The building had brought novelty to the religious life of Tunis. It was surrounded by Turkish souqs (such as the Souk El Trouk , the Souk El Berka which were created at the same period by Youssef Dey).. It was indeed the first mosque dedicated to the practice of the Muslim Hanefite rite of the Ottoman Turks. Inside the mosque were buried Youssef Dey and his family- a new Ottoman burial practice. The mosque's minaret is also innovative in style. It appeared as octagonal and crowned with a miniature green-tiled pyramid.
