Maktar
Mactaris (Makthar) is an ancient Roman site in the hills at the base of the Dorsale Mountains, 114km/71miles northwest of Kairouan and 69km/43miles southeast of Le Kef. The attractive place lies on the road between Le Kef and Kairouan. Beside the ancient roman monuments you can see here, you can also enjoy unforgettable scenery of the surroundings. This important archeological site encloses two fine triumphal arches, a forum, a bath complex and a number of mausoleums. The town gets more busy and livelier at its weekly market on Mondays. Also interesting in the town is the museum which houses an enchanting corpus of striking Punic and Roman bronze and marble statues.
