One of the historical spots worth seeing in Dougga is the Lybic-Punic Mausoleum (also 'The Lybico-Punic Mausoleum' or 'Punic-Libyan') which dates back to the 2nd century BC. Measuring 21-metre tall, this tomb is considered one of the very rare examples of royal Numidian architecture. According to an inscription found on one side of a fake window on the podium of the tomb, the mausoleum was dedicated to a Numidian prince named Atban (or Ateban, the son of Iepmatath and Palu). In an attempt to remove this carving, Sir Thomas Read, the British consul in Tunis, caused great damaged to the mausoleum in 1842 AD. This stone is now found in the British Museum.
