Khalouat al-Koubba
Built in the late 11th century AD, the Koubba (or 'Khalouat al-Koubba') just off the perfumers' souk in the heart of the medina in Sousse is a small domed tomb which once served as an inn. With its name meaning the 'domed retreat', its structure appears as a unique chevron-ribbed dome. What is most appealing is the cupola which is featured with distinct zigzag ribbing. Wonderfully installed as the monument is, little information is known about its origin. Today, the rooms surrounding the courtyard of the Koubba feature a small museum that displays day-to-day life under the Ottomans as well as the traditional Tunisian wedding preparations, costumes and customs.
