Haydrah
The remote border village of Haidra is the site of ancient Ammaedara, one of the oldest Roman towns in Africa. It's a wonderfully evocative site, spread along the northern bank of Oued Haidra, and the atmosphere is especially magical as the sun slowly sets behind the mountains of Algeria to the west, bathing the site in a rich orange glow.
The modern town is little more than a sleepy customs post on the road to the Algerian town of Tebessa, 41km to the southwest. Along both sides of the main street, a colonnaded arcade shades shops, several groceries and two tiny eateries from the fierce North African sun.
