One of the religious attractions in Tunis is the magnificent Hamuda Pasha Mosque which stands as a typical example of the artistic architecture and Ottoman style of decoration of the 17th century AD. It is locally referred to as the Mosque of Hamouda Pasha, Jami Hammuda Pasha, Jami' Hammuda Pacha, or Hammuda Pasa Camii Mosque. Built between 1654-1655 AD, the mosque was constructed by Hammuda (Muhammed) Pasha (died 1696), who succeeded his father as the Ottoman governor of Tunisia in 1631 and left his post to his son in 1662. The monument was erected within a walled courtyard at the southeast corner of Sidi ben Arus and Kasbah streets.
