Great Mosque
The Great Mosque of Mahdia is one of the worth visiting sites in El Mahdeya City. The mosque was mainly constructed by the Fatimid Caliphate Obayd Allah El Mady as a part of the construction program of El Mahdeya city in 921 AD. During the Spanish attack of the city in 1554, the major part of the mosque was destroyed except for the northern part.
The present Great Mosque of Mahdia was constructed in 1960 on the same style and layout of the original Fatimid mosque. Like the modern Mosque of Sidi Oqba in El Kairuan, the mosque is distinguished by the simplicity of decoration.
