Great Mosque of Sfax
Another splendid religious attraction in Sfax is the most celebrated Great Mosque which was founded by the Aghlabids in the middle of the 9th century AD. The monument lies amid a maze of souqs and local houses; the reason why it is sometimes referred to as the 'invisible' mosque. The ornate eastern wall is the only section that's visible; and it is best viewed from rue des Aghlabites, to the north of the mosque. The Minaret was constructed in circa AD 988 by the Fatimids and was made from good quality sandstone. The Great Mosque of Sfax bears much resemblance with the Kairouine mosque in Fez in Morocco.
