El Kebir Tower



On the highst point of the peninsula stands El Borj El Kebir or the Big Fortress that dates back to the 1595. It is believed that the fortress was constructed on the site of a palace established by the Fatimid Caliphate El Mahdy. The simple decoration and layout of the building justifies its main function which is the protection of the town. In spite of the quite expensive entry fee, it is well worth to visit this place and climb the top of the fortress to enjoy the whole view of the town and the surrounding areas. The interior plan of the fortress encloses a mosque occupying the central yard. On top of the worth admiration items within the fortress are the two relieves in the southwest corner that belong to the former building.
