EI Ghriba Synagogue



EI Ghriba Synagogue is the oldest jewish synagogue in Africa and the major jewish construction in Tunisia as a whole. It is located in the south part of Harra Saghira village or Erriadh in Jerbah Island. El Ghriba Synagogue is regarded as one of the important pilgrimage destinations for the Jews especially during Lag Ba'Omer in May. The original synagogue was constructed in 586 BC when anonymous woman appeared saying that a stone of heaven has fallen from the sky and it is a command to establish a synagogue in that area. The current building was constructed in early the 20th century. The interior part of the building is beautifully decorated with beautiful tiles and other wooden furniture highlighting the Jewish architectural style.
