Dar el Acheb (El Echab, Lacheb) is considered one of the largest houses in Dougga which appears as a solid square doorframe. Located 50 metres away from the Capitol, the building was excavated by Louis Carton at the end of the 19th century. Dating back to sometime between 164 and 166 AD, the house was so named after the family who once dwelled this area. Up to the moment, the purpose for which the building was installed remains obscure. It is rather suggested that it served either as a temple or as a residence for a wealthy family. Some experts believe that it was a sanctuary dedicated to Aesculapius.
