The Roman colosseum of El Jem Amphitheatre is one of the largest Roman Colosseum in the world that comes directly after the one of Rome. It was established in the period from 230 till 238 Ad on the hands of the African proconsul Gordian. The construction of the colosseum stopped in 238 Ad, after Gordian suicide after the failure of his rebellion against Emperor Maximus in a coup attempt to be the Emperor of Rome. The stone used in the construction of the colosseum was brought from the Sullectum Quarries (Currently Salakta) about 30 km away on the coast.
