The Catacombs of the Good Shepherd at the western outskirts of Sousse is a maze of an estimated 5.5km of underground passages, tunnels, and chambers containing the graves of more than 15,000 local Christians. Dug between the second and fourth centuries, this large burial complex comprises the early Christians who lived during the 4th and 5th centuries AD. Bodies were found wrapped in shrouds and placed in niches in the walls. Walls were often hewn in tiers, one above the other, and closed by tiles or marble plaques. Some of the graves have glass fronts that show skeletal remains.
