CHENINI
The village of Chenini in southern Tunisia is formed by a cluster of Berber houses built over a hilltop. The ruined village was once a granary (kalaa or ksar) fortified by the Berbers to defend the villagers against the nomads raids. Today, only a small community of locals inhabits the place that became a grain store. People used to dwell in cave houses down and out from the place of the ruins of the original 12th-century kalaa. Each of the houses enclosed a number of carved rooms and a courtyard surrounded with a fence. Doors are generally made from palm trunk. There is a white mosque built at one of the village's alleys.
