The Basilica of St Augustine is one of the major sites in the center of Le Kef city. It was constructed in the 4th Century BC and was used for various purposes throughout history. At the beginning it was used as a storage depot for silver and grain and one can still find the remains of the stone hooks built into the wall where petitioners could hitch and feed their horses. During the Byzntine Rule, the building was used as a church and known as Basilica of St. Augustine. After the conquest of Islam in Tunisia, the church was converted into a mosque called '' the Great Mosque''. As a mosque, a huge cupola or dome was constructed over the building.
