Arch of septimus severus
The Arch of Septimius Severus is one of the two triumphal arches in Dougga which dates from 205 AD. The building lies at the northeast end of the Roman Forum. Constructed from white marble, the arch was built to commemorate the Parthian victories which the first African-born Emperor Septimius Severus together with his sons (Caracalla and Geta) had been achieved. The Emperor had launched two military campaigns against the Parthians in 194/195 and 197-199 AD. The building has three archways resting on piers. Before each pier, stands a composite column on a pedestal. Both of the Emperor's two sons reigned simultaneously after his death.
