Aghlabid Bathhouse



The Aghlabid Reservoirs, now only two out of fifteen, locate southwest of the Capitole, outside the walls of the Dougga city. They may indicate that the site was still inhabited in the 10th century and until the early 1950s, when the inhabitants were moved to nearby Nouvelle Dougga (New Dougga). They were constructed with the purpose mainly to supply the city with water. They were filled by draining rainwater as well as water from the tributaries of the wadi Merguelli, which flow in the surrounding lowlands. Together with the other cisterns the city houses, the name 'City of the Cisterns' was given to Dougga which include some of the most important hydraulic works of the Muslim world.
