Acropolium
The Acropolium of Carthage (also 'L'Acropolium de Carthage') was built by the French in 1884 on the former site of the Cathedral of Saint-Louis. The Gothic building was dedicated to the 13th-century French saint-king Louis IX who died from an epidemic of dysentery on the beach at Carthage in 1270 during the ill-fated Eighth Crusade. For its great historical value, the Acropolium signals the power of the colonials at this very location of Carthage. Measuring 60m by 30m, the Acropolium was built in the Moorish-Byzantine style. Great restoration was made to the huge building in 1995. Today, frequent cultural events, interesting exhibitions, and concerts are being housed inside the Acropolium of Carthage.
