City of Al Kaf

Al Kaf (also Al-Kāf or Le Kef) is the capital city of Al-Kaf Governorate . It is located in northwestern Tunisia . The city is built on the cliff face of the Jebel Dyr mountain , at a height of 780m . Concerning transportation to and form the city , there is a bus and louage stations located about 600m southwest of place de I'Independance . From the bus station (ave Mongi Slim) , where there is a bus service to most of the other cities and governorates , with some buses running twice per day and others five per day for shorter destinations . Red-stripe Iouages offer also transportation to Jendouba , Beja , Makthar and Kasserine and they leave from the bus station parking lot . There are also louages to Sousse in the morning , Teboursouk and Tunis and they stop across the street .

The best locations of interest to travelers are ei¬ther around place de l'Independance or in the western half of the medina , on the slopes below (south of) the kashah . Particularly interesting in the city located at its topmost area is a storybook kasbah which offers panoramic view on its surroundings . The medina itself is located on the slope below
and consists of a web of narrow streets running through low-rise buildings . Another interesting location in the city is the ethnographic museum that focuses on Berber culture as well as Muslim , Christian and Jewish places of worship . The city is also a good place to explore the Roman sites of Dougga and Haidra as well as Jugurtha's Table . Concerning the weather of the city , it is cold in winter and very much hot in summer .

The best places to eat there are La Kheffoise located at ave Habib Bourguiba which is a little bakery and pizzeria that offers seating on a small interior balcony . Bou Maklouf , located at rue Hedi Chaker , is also a popular place for lunch where you can eat couscous , lablabi (soup) as well as some of the best chicken and chips . Andalous , located at rue Hedi Chaker is a sim¬ple eating place that serves excellent salade mechouia (traditional Tuni¬sian salad) , tasty fish and couscous . Edibles can be bought from food market like the Monoprix supermarket (runs from 8 am-1 pm & 4-8pm) , which you can reach by walking about 50m up the hill from the bus station and then 250m right (east) , you will find guiding signs along the way .
