Medenine is the major city and the capital of Medenine governorate . It locates about 76km southeast Gabes and is linked with other major cities with well prepared highways allowing public transportation to reach it . In addition to its great history as one of the major trade points in this part of Africa where travelers stop for having rest and for exchanging goods with Tunisians , the city is a tourist attraction currently . Medenine is a notable touristic city in the governorate due to the existence of a number of hotels and restaurants providing high quality service .

The most important site to be visited during your stay in Medenine is the ancient town ksour; about 8000 ghorfas that were used in the past as residence for the merchants and visitors of the city . These two-story ghorfas are distinguished by their unique design with domed rooftops and one can reach the upper floor through the flight of stairs surrounding the entrance of the room of the first floor . Such ghorfs are divided into two sections: the well preserved one which is still inhabited but you can ask their permission for having a look on the interior part of these buildings; the quite preserved part which are smaller and less impressive rooms .
