Al Mahdiyah city is the capital of Mahdia Governorate . It is located On the eastern coast of the Mediterranean , 200 km south of Tunis , 60 km south-east of Sousse , on a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean . Mahdia has a very wonderful natural setting and amazing charm . It is one of the costal towns that has an old mysterious atmosphere , without being crowded with many of the modern tourism architecture . The city is one of the best places to slow down and relax while enjoying the wonderful views of the glimmering Mediterranean . Along the northern coast , there is a large and well-developed touristique area (Zone Touristique) . The city's main activities are fish-processing industry and weaving . The market day in the city is Friday .

Transportation to and from the city includes train , bus and louage services . Train transport runs to Monastir and Sousse from (ave Farhat Hached) train station located just west of the port (about 16 trains daily) and to Tunis (once daily) . Bus and louage service run to Sousse and El-Jem , available from the bus station located 1km southwest of the train station . Louage service also runs to Monastir , Sfax and Tunis as well .

There are many places where you can eat including cafes and restaurants in mini-malls as well as the many shops in Zone Touristique . The best restaurant in the city center is perhaps the one in Hotel le Phenix . Restaurants in the city offer Grilled seafood , Couscous and Calamari . If you want to buy food stuff , the best place to buy from is the produce section of the market building , or you can also shop from the only supermarket there , (ave Habib Bourguiba) about 400m west of the Skifa el-Kahla .

The best places located on the coast where you can sit and enjoy a drink can be found in the shady place du Caire , in spite of the limited selection of pastries they offer for breakfast . The best place on the north side is perhaps the large Café el-Coucha , where you can have also break¬fast and croissants . On the south side , Cafe Sidi Salem is such an attractive place to sit in , over¬looking the Mediterranean , where you can have a drink or eat breakfast .
